-Exercising regularly makes you stronger and helps your joints, tendons, and ligaments become stronger. Weight-bearing exercise such as walking may slow bone loss resulting from osteoporosis and will keep you from having to use a cane, walker or even worse, a wheelchair.

-Alcohol affects your reflexes and balance, be exceptionally cautious when drinking.

-Rise slowly from lying down and sitting so you don't feel light-headed.

-Keep temperatures moderated in your home, temperature extremes can make you dizzy.

-Wear rubber-soled, low-heeled shoes and keep bathroom and kitchen floors dry to prevent slipping.

-Make sure you install and use handrails on stairways. Never stand on a chair to reach something. Buy a "reach stick," a grabbing tool you can find at many hardware stores.

-Keep the floors where you walk clear to prevent tripping.

-Don't carry packages that obstruct your view of your next step.

-Install grab bars by toilets, tubs and showers. Place non-skid mats, strips, or carpet on all surfaces that may get wet, especially bathtubs and shower stalls.

-When the temperature outside goes below freezing, make sure that you are wearing good boots and always use the hand rails when going down potentially slippery steps. Remember black ice is not only on the streets.

-Never use ladders unless there is someone with you to assist in stabilizing it and make sure that you don't reach too far beyond the ladder. Cleaning your gutters or repairing your roof should be left to the professionals.

Many elderly people want to feel independent by still doing major repairs around the house, however when it comes to home repairs it is always better to let professionals do the work for you. No sense getting really hurt by falling or even twisting the wrong way. Remember that you can still do the smaller jobs easily if you are not in a wheelchair.

Falls can be very detrimental to your health and will greatly degrade your quality of life especially if you end up in a wheelchair or have to use a walker or cane for the rest of your life.
