From Workout to Work-In

Ice Bath Weight Loss From Workout to Work-In.

What do you do when the weather keeps you from making it to the gym? Well, I thought about giving my body and extra day of rest, but I knew that would make getting back into my workout routine even harder. Although rest is very beneficial to weight loss, too much rest can cause you to lose muscle mass and strength. Our bodies were designed to move and I was determined not to let anything keep me from moving mine.

About six inches of snow and ice kept me from the gym today, but I still got my workout done. Since I've been working out with a personal trainer, I've been keeping a log of every training session we have. I'm glad I did because I really needed it today.

My trainer usually tells me to do a 10 minute warm up on any cardio machine, and then we get right into the workout. Here are some of the exercises the trainer had me do that don't require being in the gym or using weight training equipment.

25 Squats: I did these in my bedroom.

10 Push ups: I leaned against my dresser to complete these reps.

15 Lunges: My trainer showed me how to place one foot against the wall, point the heel of the opposite foot toward the ceiling and drop that knee without letting the opposite knee touch the wall.

Bicep Curls: 20lbs - 20 reps: I actually found some weights in a closet that helped me complete these reps. If you don't have weights, try lifting a gallon of water, but increase your reps to about 25.

Knee lifts: 25 each leg: I did these in my office while listening to my favorite tunes.

Side leg raises: 20 each leg: I did these in my office too.

15 Dips: I used the edge of my bath tub to complete these reps. The tub was just the right height.

I couldn't do my 20 minute cardio workout on the treadmill, so I pulled out an old "walk-at-home" DVD that I have and I got my cardio done.

Now this may not seem like much to you, but this workout did increase my heart rate and had me sweating for about 35 minutes and it gave me a good calorie burn for today. I'm glad I didn't let the weather keep me from my workout routine and I felt great when I was done. If you are really determined to lose weight, then don't let anything stop you; especially the weather.

As always, please consult your doctor prior to starting any workout routine.
