Our society is often 'running on empty,' addicted to coffee and caffeine in all its forms.

We use it to get us going in the morning and often throughout the day to keep us alert at work.

A recent news article says sleep deprived doctors in Australia have been ordered to drink up to six cups of coffee a day to stay awake during extended shifts. (Reuters, Canberra).

Yet many people fail to realize that too much caffeine will make a person's health worse, by stressing the adrenal glands.

The average North American ( and this probably includes Australians as well) consumes 150 to 225 mg of caffeine daily, which is about the amount of 1-2 cups of coffee. Multiply that by six times and you're consuming a lot of caffeine.

Natural Energy Sources

If a person needs an energy boost to get through the day (or night), there are some excellent herbal supplements that will help without negative side effects.

Green tea has recently come into favour as a natural stimulant and can be found in many forms. Besides the basic tea, green tea is often blended with fruit juices to provide a refreshing iced tea beverage.

Green tea affects the nervous system, creating a feeling of comfort and exhilaration. Green tea is also known as an anti-oxidant and has also been shown to lower LDL cholesterol levels.

Green tea does have caffeine, however it is in lower doses than coffee when used in the same manner.

Another option is to try Yerba Mate, which is drunk like a tea and tastes like a cross between green tea and coffee with hints of tobacco and oak. It is a South American drink of health and friendship.

Though it does contain caffeine, it has health benefits such as stimulating mental alertness, aiding in weight loss, relieving stress, calming allergies, aiding weight loss, supporting the immune system and cleansing the colon.

Gotu Kola is another herb to consider as it is an anti-stress herb that has been shown to decrease adrenal enlargement. It promotes endurance and energy and is also used for sluggish digestion and to improve memory. As sluggish digestion can affect energy, Gotu Kola is an all around great herb to use.

Finally, peppermint tea is an herbal stimulant that is caffeine free. Peppermint can also be consumed as a supplement or the essential oil can be used in the bath, inhaled or rubbed onto the body in a base oil such as sweet almond oil.

Please note that some of these herbs may have contraindications for pregnancy and should not be used unless a qualified health care practitioner is consulted.
