Most of us love sugar and it's no wonder so many of us have such a sweet tooth because sugar comes so perfectly packaged to hook us in and keep us going back for more. Therefore knowing how to stop cravings for sugar is going to be an essential part of your weight loss toolkit.

Sugar isn't just the while grainy stuff that we put into our tea or coffee. Not, it comes to us in the form of pretty cupcakes with their gorgeous coloured icing, delicious doughnuts with cream or jam oozing out of them, crunchy savoury snacks, creamy chocolate that just happens to melt in the mouth in that lovely warm comforting way and the list goes on and on.

Just about everything that looks and smells delicious is laden with sugar but really there is nothing to love about it.

You need to learn how to stop cravings for sugar simply because most people are under the illusion that eating fat causes us to get fat, but it's not the case - sugar is the main culprit and sugar makes you fat simply because your body can't process very much of it. If you are overweight then it's likely that up to 60% of all the sugar you eat is being stored on your hips, tummy, bottom and thighs where unless you stop eating so much of it, it is going to remain for a very long time.

The reason so many of us reach out for sugary snacks is because sugar produces a similar, if not even worse effect on the brain to that of heroin and morphine; these drugs produce a 'feel good' chemical in the brain, an almost instant feeling of pleasure and calm and unfortunately it is this chemically enhanced feeling that keeps us going back for more.

For example:

For many of us, when we were children, sugary treats were used as a reward. I know if I had done something good at school my Mum bought me a packet of sweets on the way home, when I went to visit grandma there were always lovely cakes and biscuits waiting for me and if ever I was sad or I had fallen over and hurt myself I would be given 'something nice' to cheer me up.

If you can relate to this you will also begin to realise that this pattern of behaviour is something you still have now; you are an emotional eater.

You learnt to associate sugary snacks and foods with happy times or something you have to 'make yourself feel better' but let me tell you that no amount of sugar in the world that is going to solve your problems, you have to deal with them head on, not try to bury them with food.

Of course the obvious answer to how to stop cravings for sugar is to just stop eating it, but like any addiction it takes some time and effort to beat it and unlike heroin or other drugs you need food to live so you can't just give everything up!

However there are a few simple steps you can take immediately to cut back on the amount of sugar you consume.

For example, avoid eating 'low fat, diet foods'. I know this might go against everything you have thought of previously but anything that has the fat removed from it has to be flavoured with something and in this case it's sugar.

Of course it goes without saying that cakes, white bread, sweets, chocolate, ice cream are all serious culprits and should be avoided or at least eaten very infrequently. I'd love to tell you never to eat them again but you know as well as I do that if you deprive yourself of something then you are likely to want it all the more.

Fortunately once you start cutting back on sugar you will be amazed at just how quickly you lose the taste for it, and when you do have some you'll actually need a lot less to be satisfied than you ever did before.

Knowing how to stop cravings for sugar takes a bit of practice but it can be done quite easily. To make a start, the next time you feel a craving coming on go and take a bath, go for a walk, paint your nails or phone a friend; do anything to distract yourself for a few minutes because that's literally all it takes to transfer your thoughts away from the craving and onto something else. Sugar is a bit like a naughty child, if you take the attention away from it, the less trouble it will be!
