How do you recuperate after an extensive workout? Did you know that the recovery after a workout can be just as important as a workout? What is the best and fastest way for recovery? Sometimes people just continue to go about their day with out any regard to their recovery process after a workout. Here are some simple recoveries!
It's funny, because on a very popular tv show where people are losing a ton of weight week after week, we see their workouts, but, we don't see their recovery time. What most people don't know is that they are working out from four to six hours a day, but, they are also spending a lot of time in recovery. They will do a two hour workout that is really tough! Then, they are in with a group of specialists. Everything from chiropractors, to massage therapists, and my favorite simple recovery, the whirlpool or hot tub. The tv show rarely shows this part of their workout regimen. But, in all actuality, it is a very important part of it.
I know when I have a really strenuous workout, many times, I will come home and I am wiped out for the rest of the day. I will take a nap for at least an hour, sometimes two. This really helps me to recuperate my body. The other thing that I make absolute sure of is that I get some good quality, healthy carbohydrates and protein in my body. Another part of that nutrition equation for me is electrolyte's. I drink a ton of water, so, many times my electrolyte's are flushed out of my system. Electrolyte's can give you a great amount of energy.
Also, if you have quite a bit of weight to loss, and you are working on recovery, don't be afraid to come home and ice your joints. You can ice your elbows and your knees. When we have a lot of weight on us, it can really be tough on our joints. We want to keep any sort of swelling down to a minimum. Also, if there is a particular muscle that is really sore, you can ice that muscle as well after your workouts. Sometimes, I will ice my knees after a really hard day of spinning and kickboxing, even if I don't feel any pain in them. I always want to make sure everything stays healthy.
My other hugely favorite recovery is to soak in a really hot bath with Epsom salt right before I go to bed. This relaxes all the muscles, and I sleep a lot better, and I'm more rested. Sleep, rest, and nutrition are the keys to recovery after a super strenuous workout.
